America warns Sri Lanka – avoid helping Iran, tension in India’s neighborhood

Colombo. Sri Lanka once again seems to be stuck in the maze of international diplomacy regarding Iran. According to a report, US officials have given a stern warning to Sri Lanka that if it continues to provide any kind of supply to about 20 Iranian tankers stranded near its coast, it may face US sanctions. The crisis deepened when Sri Lanka was providing basic humanitarian needs like food, fuel and fresh water to these Iranian ships stranded in the Indian Ocean.
Strong warning from American Embassy
According to information received from Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry sources, officials of the US Embassy in Colombo have made it clear that despite the plea of humanitarian crisis, the supply of essential goods to Iranian ships should be stopped immediately. After this strict warning from America, a diplomatic and economic crisis has arisen in front of the Sri Lankan administration, because the national security apparatus there was worried that the Iranian crew should not be left alone in the middle.
Sri Lanka faces a crisis of sovereignty and economic interests.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has attempted to distance the government from the private suppliers who were allegedly supplying goods to these ships. Speaking to ‘Sunday Times’ he confirmed that there are a total of 47 foreign ships outside Sri Lankan territorial waters, of which 15 are Iranian ships. However, he also clarified that there was a demand for essential commodities from Iran, but the Sri Lankan government has not officially provided any help nor does it have any intention to do so.
Now the biggest question before Colombo is how it will maintain a balance between its economic interests and the freedom to provide humanitarian aid to its friendly countries without succumbing to the pressure of Western countries.
